PM pays tribute to RSS centenary celebrations; Tamil Nadu CM condemns
Nagpur, October 3, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a special postage stamp and a commemorative coin on the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The event was held at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur, where the Prime Minister appreciated the Sangh's centenary journey and accorded national importance to its contributions. The event was attended by RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat, Union ministers, and several prominent leaders.
In his speech, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the social and cultural contributions of the RSS. “In the last hundred years, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has worked tirelessly for the social and cultural upliftment of the country. Its volunteers have always been at the forefront in times of calamity, in social reforms and in nation building,” Modi said. He paid a historic tribute to the work of the Sangh through this postage stamp and coin.
Features of the postage stamp and coin
The newly released postage stamp marks the centenary celebrations of the RSS, featuring the logo of the Sangh and the date of its foundation (September 27, 1925). The commemorative coin also features a depiction of the RSS's contributions. It will be a special attraction for coin and stamp collectors, the Department of Posts said.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's criticism
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has strongly criticised the event. He termed the decision as a "misuse of state power" and accused the government of bias. Stalin said in his statement, "The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is an ideological organisation, and its ideology has not been accepted by all parts of the country. Promoting such an organisation at the national level is an attack on the values ??of democracy." He further said that the central government should implement policies that respect all religions and ideologies.
History and work of RSS
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was founded in 1925 by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. Over the past hundred years, the Sangh has made significant contributions to education, social service, and disaster management. The Sangh's volunteers are active in various social activities across the country. However, the ideology and working methods of some political parties and groups are criticized, due to which the Sangh has always been a controversial subject.
Political reactions
The ceremony and the release of postage stamps and coins have been supported by some political parties, while others have objected to it. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has welcomed the decision, calling it a tribute to the Sangh's contributions. On the other hand, the Congress and other opposition parties have termed it "ideological bias".
