Washington.D.14 - Gay marriage has now got legal recognition in America. President Joe Biden signed a bill legalizing gay marriage in the presence of thousands of people. Biden said on the South Lawn of the White House, ' This law and the love it defends, it strikes hate in all forms. And that's why this law matters to every American.
Singers Sam Smith and Cyndi Lauper performed on the occasion. Vice President Kamala Harris missed a same-sex wedding ceremony in San Francisco. The White House played a recording of Biden's television interview a decade ago when he sparked a political uproar by endorsing gay marriage. Biden was the Vice President at that time and the then President Barack Obama had not supported same-sex marriage till then. However, three days later, Obama himself publicly endorsed same-sex marriage.
Lawmakers from both political parties were present during Tuesday's signing of the bill, showing a growing acceptance in both parties on one of the country's most contentious issues. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer arrived at the ceremony wearing the same purple tie he wore to his daughter's wedding. His daughter and his wife are expecting their first child.
