Kashmiri student's thrilling story of war in Iran, safe return under 'Operation Sindhu'

New Delhi, June 19, 2025: 110 Indian students stranded in Iran due to the escalating war-like situation between Iran and Israel were safely brought back to India under 'Operation Sindhu'. One of these Kashmiri students, Varta, narrated her harrowing experience in Iran after reaching Delhi.
Varta said, "We did not think we would return home safely. The situation in Iran was very critical. Bomb blasts were going on in our surroundings, missiles were being seen. We were very scared." She thanked the Indian embassy and government, which took immediate steps and brought them to India via Armenia.
According to the Jammu and Kashmir Students' Union, 90 of the 110 students at Urmia Medical University are from the Kashmir Valley. Another student, Mir Khalif, said, "Bombs fell in our neighbourhood. It felt like a war was going on. We are grateful that the Indian government saved us."
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh welcomed the students at the Delhi airport and said that 'Operation Sindhu' is a testament to India's commitment to the safety of its citizens. The Ministry of External Affairs said that there are about 4,000 Indian nationals in Iran, half of whom are students, mainly pursuing medical studies.
This is not India's first attempt to bring back citizens from war-torn areas. Earlier, Indians were safely brought back from Ukraine under 'Operation Ganga' in 2022 and from Israel under 'Operation Ajay' in 2023.
