Over 16,000 Vacancies in MPSC Group-C Exam; One-Year Special Age Relaxation Granted – Interim Report of High-Level Committee Submitted

Mumbai: A high-level committee, constituted by the government on September 4, 2026, with the objective of making the state’s recruitment examination process more transparent, secure, and reliable, has submitted its interim report. Based on consultations with students and stakeholders, the committee has prioritized recommendations on several urgent issues. Key Recommendations: 1. Significant Increase in Group-C Vacancies
Approximately 1.2 million (12 lakh) candidates have applied for the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) Group-C Combined Preliminary Examination 2026. Currently, an advertisement has been issued for over 5,000 posts. Requisitions for an additional 11,000-plus posts have been submitted to the Commission by various government departments. The committee has recommended incorporating these additional posts via a corrigendum, bringing the total number of vacancies to over 16,000. 2. One-Time, One-Year Relaxation in Maximum Age Limit for All Recruitment Exams
In response to the demands of candidates, the committee has recommended a one-year relaxation in the maximum age limit as a special measure. This relaxation will apply to:
All advertisements published after January 1, 2026, for which the selection process has not yet commenced; and
All advertisements to be published up to December 31, 2027.
3. Recommendation to Reopen the Application Process
To ensure that candidates who become eligible due to the increased number of vacancies and the age relaxation are given an opportunity to apply, the committee has recommended reopening the application process for the Group-C Examination 2026. Other Important Recommendations:
No changes to the existing examination pattern or syllabus for the Group-C Preliminary Examination. Announcing the main examination syllabi for newly included cadres at the earliest.
Canceling the previous procedure for question paper creation and developing new question papers through a secure process.
Implementing stringent security measures for the printing, storage, and transportation of question papers and OMR answer sheets.
Ensuring the presence of police personnel, CCTV surveillance, signal jammers, and trained staff at examination centers.
This recommendation will come as a relief to lakhs of candidates. It is expected that the government will reach a decision on this report soon.
