PM Modi Leads NITI Aayog Meeting as Mamata Banerjee, Siddaramaiah, and Vijayan Skip Key Discussions

New Delhi, May 24, 2025: The 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, took place today at Bharat Mandapam, focusing on the theme ‘Viksit Rajya for Viksit Bharat @2047’. The meeting aimed to outline a roadmap for states to craft long-term, inclusive vision documents aligned with national priorities while addressing local needs. However, the absence of several prominent chief ministers marked the event.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan were notably absent. Siddaramaiah cited a prior commitment in Mysuru but sent a message to be presented at the meeting. Vijayan delegated Kerala’s representation to Finance Minister K N Balagopal. No official reason was provided for Banerjee’s absence. Additionally, Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy, who leads an NDA-led coalition, also did not attend.
The meeting saw participation from other opposition chief ministers, including Tamil Nadu’s M.K. Stalin, Punjab’s Bhagwant Mann, Telangana’s Revanth Reddy, and Himachal Pradesh’s representative, who had boycotted the previous meeting in July 2024 over concerns about a “discriminatory” Union Budget. This time, these leaders attended, raising demands for increased funds and resources for their states.
Prime Minister Modi, in his opening remarks, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts, stating, “If the Centre and all the States come together and work like Team India, no goal is impossible.” The session, moderated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, included discussions on state-specific strategies to achieve the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, focusing on human development, economic growth, sustainability, technology, and governance reforms.
The absence of Banerjee, Siddaramaiah, and Vijayan sparked discussions, with some viewing it as a continuation of tensions between the Centre and certain opposition-ruled states. The NITI Aayog, with Modi as its chairman, comprises all state chief ministers, lieutenant governors of Union Territories, and several Union ministers, making it a critical platform for Centre-state coordination.
