Rupali Chakankar's Position as NCP State Women's Wing Chief in Jeopardy!

Split Emerges within NCP over Ashok Kharat Scandal; Calls for Chakankar's Resignation Intensify
Mumbai/Pune, March 23, 2026: A major controversy has erupted within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) (Ajit Pawar faction). Citing the damage being inflicted upon the party's image due to the scandal involving Ashok Kharat—a self-styled godman from Nashik—a faction within the party has demanded the immediate resignation of Rupali Chakankar, the State President of the Women's Wing.
The scandal involves grave allegations against Ashok Kharat, including the sexual exploitation and abuse of women. Following his arrest, a sensation swept through the party after photographs and videos of Rupali Chakankar with Kharat went viral. Consequently, just two days ago, Chakankar was compelled to submit her resignation from the post of Chairperson of the State Women's Commission to Sunetra Pawar.
The matter was the subject of intense debate during a meeting of senior party leaders held two days ago. The consensus among most office-bearers is that Chakankar should step down from her position as State Women's Wing Chief to put an end to the defamation of the party. However, some leaders have come to her defense, arguing, "Action should not be taken solely on the basis of photographs; many leaders have photos with Kharat—why is only a woman being targeted?"
Currently, Sunetra Pawar's final decision on the matter remains pending. It is reported that the decision has been deferred due to internal strife within the party. Leaders such as Rupali Thombre Patil have leveled serious allegations against Chakankar, demanding her arrest and even issuing a warning that they would quit the party if she does not resign.
This entire controversy has brought to light a clear division into two distinct factions within the NCP. While one faction remains adamant in its demand for a resignation, the other advises exercising restraint. Sunetra Pawar's decision in the coming days is expected to prove crucial for the future of the party.
