Bengaluru, September 22, 2025 (Special Correspondent): Another shocking incident has taken place in the country's air transport sector, shocking information has come to light that an attempt was made to hijack an Air India Express flight on the Bengaluru-Varanasi route. This incident had created immense fear and confusion among the passengers on the plane. However, this crisis situation was averted due to the alertness of the pilot. Nine people have been detained in this case, and some shocking truths have come to light during the investigation. This incident is raising questions about the weakness of air security, and the Civil Aviation Authority (DGCA) and security agencies have started immediate action.
As soon as we hear the description of this incident, only one question arises in our mind – how and why was the hijack attempt made? According to the information, Air India Express flight IX-1142, which took off from Kembar Palace International Airport in Bengaluru at 7:30 am and left for Varanasi. There were about 180 passengers and 6 crew members on board the plane. When the plane started its journey of about 1 hour and 20 minutes, suddenly a passenger ran towards the cockpit door and tried to open it. This act caused a lot of panic in the plane and created panic among the passengers. Some passengers screamed, while others ran towards the crew members for help. The pilot in the cockpit immediately became alert and took control of the plane and instructed the crew members. Due to this effort, the possibility of the plane going astray was avoided and the plane landed safely at Varanasi airport.
As soon as the information about the incident was received, a large security force was deployed at Varanasi airport. Immediately, the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) and local police surrounded the plane. The nine people arrested in this case include the main accused, who is the passenger who tried to open the cockpit door. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the remaining eight are the associates of the accused. The names of the accused have not been officially released yet, but they are said to be residents of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The investigating officers said that all of them may be associated with an organization whose aim is to create political or religious pressure by diverting the plane in the wrong direction.
The shocking truth that has come to light in the investigation is even more serious. Preliminary investigations have revealed that this attempt was not just that of a single person, but there may be a bigger conspiracy behind it. The accused has been found with materials prepared to take control of the plane, and they have received encrypted messages from their phones. These messages have revealed that there are instructions to land the plane at a specific location. However, it is not yet clear which organization hatched this conspiracy. The Union Home Ministry has taken the matter seriously and has handed over the investigation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Air India officials said that the company will take additional measures for the safety of passengers and an internal investigation into the incident is also underway.
This incident is a big warning in terms of air safety. The number of such incidents has been increasing in India in the last few years. In 2023, an Air India flight on the Mumbai-London route received a bomb threat, while in 2024, a security lapse occurred at Delhi airport. In this backdrop, the Civil Aviation Authority (DGCA) has issued a warning to all airlines and has directed them to increase the security of cockpit doors. According to experts, it is necessary to increase the number of CCTV cameras in the aircraft, provide special training to crew members and tighten the screening of passengers. The incident has increased unease among passengers, and the hashtag #AirIndiaHijack has started trending on social media. Many have demanded strict action from the government.
An Air India Express spokesperson said, "We prioritize the safety of our passengers. There was no loss of life in this incident and the aircraft landed safely. We will fully cooperate with the investigation." Some of the passengers on the plane told the media, "The atmosphere on the plane was very tense. We thought these were the last moments. The pilot and crew members should be commended." The incident has reignited the debate on air travel safety and the government has ordered a report to be submitted at the earliest.
Further investigation into the matter is underway and we will update our readers as soon as new information is available. This incident is being considered as a wake-up call for the country's air safety and strict steps will be taken to prevent such attempts in the future. Passengers have been urged to be vigilant while travelling by air.
