Two thousand notes worth Rs 7,581 crore still with people

New Delhi. 97.87 percent of the two thousand rupee banknotes have returned to the banking system and only notes worth Rs 7,581 crore are left with the public. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) gave this information on Monday.
The RBI had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 denomination banknotes from circulation on May 19, 2023. The total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation after the close of business on May 19, 2023 was Rs 3.56 lakh crore, which has come down to Rs 7,581 crore at the close of business on June 28, 2024. The central bank said in a statement, “Thus, 97.87 percent of the Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023 have returned to the banking system.” The facility of depositing and/or exchanging Rs 2000 banknotes was available in all bank branches across the country till October 7, 2023. The facility of exchange of Rs 2000 banknotes is also available in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank from May 19, 2023.
