Waiver of loans worth thousands of crores of industrialists, but why are farmers being ignored? - Supriya Sule hits out at Devendra Fadnavis government
Mumbai, October 1, 2025:- Farmers have suffered huge losses due to continuous heavy rains and floods in Maharashtra. Standing crops on agricultural lands have been washed away, while the lives of farmers and common citizens have been greatly affected. In this time of crisis, Supriya Sule, one of the leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar group), has harshly criticized the Devendra Fadnavis government. Raising the question of how quickly the government takes steps to waive loans worth thousands of crores of rupees of industrialists, but why is it neglected in the matter of loan waiver of hardworking farmers, Sule has drawn attention to the government's inaction.
Speaking on this issue at a press conference organized in Mumbai on Tuesday, Supriya Sule described the pain of farmers known as "Bali Raja". "Maharashtra is currently facing the twin crises of flood and drought. Farmers' crops have been destroyed, their livelihoods have been devastated. Still, the expected help is not being received from the Fadnavis government. Sharad Pawar Saheb has already sent two detailed letters to the state government, keeping in mind both the flood and drought situations. In them, necessary measures have been suggested for farmers and citizens," said Sule.
In the wake of this crisis, Supriya Sule has on her own initiative sent seven to ten trucks full of agricultural supplies and essential commodities from Mumbai. She is trying to reach this aid to the flood-affected farmers and citizens. "This has been sent as primary aid, but the government should go beyond this and take immediate action," she said.
Sule further said that two months ago, she had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. At that time, she had demanded that Maharashtra be declared drought-affected and the entire loan of farmers be waived. However, now the situation has worsened due to the flood situation. "Now we have to work on two fronts. First, declare the areas drought-hit and waive off all the loans of farmers. Second, take concrete steps towards rehabilitation," Sule said.
This criticism is very important given the backdrop of the agricultural crises in Maharashtra. Lakhs of farmers have been in debt due to continuous droughts and now floods in the state in the last few years. During the 2024 monsoon itself, there was heavy rain in many districts, which destroyed the crops of farmers in about 10 lakh hectares. Still, the government has not announced a large-scale loan waiver for farmers. On the contrary, the government is active in waiving thousands of crores of rupees of loans given to big companies by industrialists. These dual policies are creating discontent among farmers.
Sule said that he had discussed this with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan. Also, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis mentioned that he had held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but expressed regret that no concrete results were coming out of it. "I don't understand why the government is so indifferent? The flood victims should get immediate help, a complete loan waiver should be announced and drought assistance should be announced. Rehabilitation is necessary to make people stand up. Schools and colleges should be built, notebooks should be given to girls and direct financial assistance should be provided through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)," said Sule.
Citing the example of the state of Punjab, Sule said, "In Punjab, farmers are given Rs 50,000 assistance per hectare. The Maharashtra government should also adopt a similar model. This is possible, it just needs political will."
In this criticism, Sule specifically addressed the issue of loan waiver for industrialists. "If the loans of industrialists worth thousands of crores of rupees can be waived, then why are hardworking farmers not getting justice? Why is the government doing so much injustice to farmers?" he asked. The issue has heated up the political atmosphere. There has been no official reaction from the BJP-Mahayuti government on this yet, but leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party and Mahavikas Aghadi are supporting Sule's stand.
Sule finally clarified that, "This is not the time for political attacks. It is a time for joining hands and coming together to help. Helping every person in the village is our priority. Instead of imposing laws, focus on providing justice to the victims."
Agriculture in Maharashtra is the backbone of the economy. 60 percent of the state's population depends on agriculture. Last year, 1.5 million farmers demanded loan waiver, but only received partial assistance. Now, farmers have become even more vulnerable due to the twin crises of flood and drought. Farmer suicides have increased in districts like Nashik, Ahmednagar, Jalgaon. Against this backdrop, Supriya Sule's demand is not just political, but a fight for the rights of farmers.
Everyone's attention is on what steps will be taken by the central and state governments now. The Nationalist Party led by Sharad Pawar has supported farmer protests in the past too. Like the loan waiver of 2018, a large amount of assistance is expected to be announced now. Otherwise, dissatisfaction will increase in farmer organizations and political instability will arise.
