Due to Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and AIMIM, Congress's position is critical in the Akola Municipal Corporation elections!

January 2, 2026, Akola: The challenge for Congress has increased in the Akola Municipal Corporation elections. There is a possibility of vote division due to the candidates of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). This has raised fears that Congress might lose its traditional voter base.
Although Congress gained some strength by winning the assembly election in the Akola West assembly constituency, the failure to form an alliance with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi in the municipal elections has led that party to field its own candidates. On the other hand, AIMIM has also fielded as many as 38 candidates, and their success in the municipal council elections has boosted their confidence.
AIMIM achieved considerable success in the municipal council elections in the district. They won 5 corporators in Akot, and one each in Barshitakli and Hivarkhed. This has allowed AIMIM to target Congress's vote bank. Notably, in all eight wards, both AIMIM and Congress have fielded candidates for all four seats, leading to an expected direct competition.
In wards 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 11, 17, and 18, the presence of candidates from both parties will lead to a division of votes. Similarly, in ward 14, AIMIM has fielded 3 candidates and Congress 2, while in ward 16, the numbers are 2 and 1 respectively. All this has become a cause for concern for Congress.
The influence of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi is also important
Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi has also won one mayor and 17 corporators in the municipal council elections. Although Congress has 20 corporators, since both parties share a similar voter base, Vanchit's decision to contest independently could prove costly for Congress.
Responsibility on MLA Sajid Khan Pathan
Congress has entrusted the responsibility of the local elections to the MLAs. If Akola West MLA Sajid Khan Pathan's performance is not successful, his influence within the party will diminish. According to political observers, the path for the Congress party has become difficult due to AIMIM and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi.
The fact that AIMIM secured the second position in the Akot mayoral election indicates a shift in the Congress voter base as well. Congress officials are worried whether a similar scenario will unfold in the municipal elections.
