PMC Election 2026: Ajit Pawar attacks BJP - City in a deplorable state, corruption openly challenged!

Pune, January 5, 2026 (Special Correspondent):
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led administration of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) ahead of the upcoming elections. Speaking at a victory resolution rally in Baner, Pawar said, "The administrators in Pune have completely ruined the city. Despite receiving sufficient funds from the central and state governments, this administration has neglected the city's development."
Ajit Pawar was the main speaker at the rally organized in support of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidates Baburao Chandere, Amol Balwadkar, Parvati Nimhan, and Gayatri Medhe-Kokate from Ward No. 9 (Baner-Balewadi-Pashan-Sus-Mahalunge-Sutarwadi-Someshwarwadi). Senior party leaders Abasaheb Sutar, Rahul Balwadkar, District Bank Vice President Sunil Chandere, Samir Chandere, and Prakash Tatya Balwadkar were also present.
Pawar severely criticized the PMC's financial management. "In the last four to five years, ?1130 crore in funds were received, but only ?658 crore were spent. Work on 1384 km of roads was planned, but only 425 km were completed.  Despite spending ?73,000 crore in the last eight years, what do we see in the city? Water scarcity, an increasing number of water tankers, foul smell in the slums, and Pune ranking fourth in traffic congestion in a study of 500 cities worldwide!" Pawar questioned.
Referring to the fraud happening under the guise of 'smart city' projects, he said, "Valuable land has fallen into the hands of a few, while the welfare of the people has been neglected. By inflating tenders and misusing funds, the 'Koyta Gang' (machete gang) has looted the city. I will eliminate this gang and will not spare anyone," he asserted. Referring to his previous tenure, Pawar said, "During our time, traffic never came to a standstill. I will show you, with evidence, the road work that was completed at a low cost. This power has gone to the heads of a handful of people, and we need to take it away from them." Appealing to voters to entrust the city's administration to 'safe and capable hands' in the upcoming elections, he told them, "Give the municipal corporation into the hands of trustworthy leaders for the next five years. Don't fall for the opposition's games."
Stating that this election will determine the future of Pune, Pawar appealed to the people to elect the NCP candidates. After the meeting, the party workers demonstrated their enthusiasm by holding a rally.
Signs of Change: Ajit Pawar's statements have heated up the political atmosphere in the PMC. The BJP has not yet given any reaction.
