EVMs enjoy majority support in Karnataka; Survey answers Rahul Gandhi's doubts

Bengaluru, January 2, 2026: According to a survey conducted by the Congress government in Karnataka, 83 percent of the people in the state have complete faith in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). This survey directly contradicts the doubts raised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding EVMs and the Election Commission. The BJP has launched a strong attack on Rahul Gandhi in light of this, stating that "Karnataka has told a different story."
The survey was conducted under the guidance of the Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka. According to the report, titled "Evaluation of Endline Survey of Citizen's Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (CAP)," 83 percent of citizens trust EVMs. Of these, 69.39 percent believe the EVM results are accurate, while 14.22 percent have given complete support to EVMs. This figure has increased from 77.9 percent in the 2023 survey.
The survey is based on 5,100 citizens across 102 assembly constituencies in four divisions. This includes the Bengaluru, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, and Mysuru divisions. Looking at the division-wise statistics, the highest trust was seen in the Kalaburagi division at 83.24 percent, with 11.24 percent having blind faith in the security of EVMs (total 94.48 percent). Trust levels were 88.68 percent in Mysuru, 85.33 percent in Belagavi, while Bengaluru had the lowest figure at 73 percent.
BJP leader R. Ashoka criticized Rahul Gandhi in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He said, "For many years, Rahul Gandhi has been traveling across the country saying that democracy in the country is in danger. He doesn't trust EVMs and doesn't trust our system. But Karnataka has told a different story." The BJP interpreted this to mean that the Congress government's survey contradicts the claims of its own leaders. Rahul Gandhi had raised doubts about the reliability of EVMs, alleging that votes were being stolen due to them, and questioned the credibility of the Election Commission.
This survey, conducted after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, indicates that awareness and trust among the state's citizens regarding EVMs have increased. The Congress government has not given any official reaction to this, but the BJP has viewed it as a self-inflicted blow. Despite the nationwide controversy surrounding the use of EVMs, this survey from Karnataka paints a positive picture.
