Election Commission's historic roundtable conference in Delhi: Discussions with State Commissioners after 27 years
New Delhi - The Election Commission of India today organized a landmark National Roundtable Conference at Bharat Mandapam. Election Commissioners of all states and union territories of the country are participating in this conference. Notably, such a conference is being organized for the first time since 1999, which is expected to give a new direction to the election process.
The main objective of this conference is to enhance coordination between the Central Election Commission and the State Election Commissions. The meeting is being held under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner Dnyanesh Kumar, and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi are also present. State Commissioners are participating in the conference along with their legal and technology department officials.
The conference will discuss various aspects of the election process. These include the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), improving the accuracy of voter lists, technical exchange and strengthening cooperative federalism. Senior officials of the Commission will present a new digital platform 'ECINET', which will focus on transparency and security of EVMs.
As per the 73rd and 74th Amendments, the State Election Commissions are responsible for preparing electoral rolls for Panchayat and Municipal elections and conducting elections. In addition, 22 states and Union Territories have been directed to complete preparations for the 'Special Intensive Revision' (SIR) campaign at the earliest. The campaign is likely to start from April.
This conference will be a significant step towards bringing reforms in the electoral system, which will help in making the electoral process in the country stronger and more transparent.
