Lalbaug's 'Bharat Mata' Comes Back to Life! Cinema Hall Quietly Reopens After Six Years
Mumbai: The historic Bharat Mata Cinema in Lalbaug quietly reopened on Tuesday (March 25, 2026), following a long wait of six years. The hall commenced its new journey at 5:30 PM with a screening of a Hindi film. The comeback was marked by simplicity, taking place without any grand inauguration ceremony.
A defining feature of this cinema hall is its tradition of screening Marathi films. In particular, films starring Dada Kondke have consistently drawn massive crowds here. The management has announced that screenings of Marathi films are set to resume very soon.
Currently, the cinema hall is being operated under the aegis of the 'One Cinema' company. A signboard reading 'One Cinemas' has been installed at the main entrance, while the old 'Bharat Mata Cinema' signage has been preserved and placed alongside it. The red curtain draped over the entrance has not yet been removed, though it is scheduled to be taken down shortly.
The renovation project features a larger screen, a new projector room, and the installation of 40 comfortable sofas in the balcony section. However, the exterior gallery has been refurbished in a manner that retains the distinct identity of the old 'Bharat Mata' cinema. Consequently, for Marathi film premieres, the hall will once again evoke the comforting feeling of 'coming home.'
Speaking to the media, Kapil Bhopatkar, Managing Partner at One Cinema, stated:
“Marathi films will be screened here very soon. The significance of this cinema hall is recognized not only by us but by the entire Marathi film industry.”
He further added, “The journey to ensure its survival was arduous. When we initially closed the hall for two or three months in 2020, we never anticipated that it would remain shut for such a prolonged period. Subsequently, the COVID-19 pandemic altered everything and caused delays. Nevertheless—better late than never—we are delighted that the hall has finally reopened.”
For enthusiasts of Marathi cinema, the revival of this historic hall in Lalbaug comes as truly delightful news.
