Satara ZP Election Fallout Rocks Assembly; Allegations of 'Stifling Democracy' Raised; Tension Persists Even After Fadnavis-Shinde Meeting

Mumbai: The intense repercussions of the conflict between the ruling allies—the BJP and the Shinde faction—during the elections for the posts of President and Vice-President of the Satara Zilla Parishad (District Council) resonated strongly today in both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council.
Alleging that ministers were manhandled and that voting members were obstructed, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde asserted that "democracy was stifled." Ministers Shambhuraj Desai and Makarand Patil also claimed to have been physically assaulted and expressed strong displeasure regarding the conduct of the police. They demanded immediate action in the matter.
In the Legislative Council, Deputy Chairperson Dr. Neelam Gorhe had issued directives to suspend the Satara Superintendent of Police. However, the controversy escalated further when Council Chairperson Prof. Ram Shinde subsequently stayed that order. The tension between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde over this issue was clearly evident.
A meeting took place between Fadnavis and Shinde in the evening; however, details regarding the discussions held during the meeting were not disclosed. It has been announced that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is scheduled to make a statement regarding this matter in the Legislative Assembly tomorrow, Tuesday.
This incident has once again brought to the fore the underlying tension existing between the two constituent parties of the ruling 'Mahayuti' (Grand Alliance).
