Lax approach to air pollution control; High Court threatens to stop salaries of municipal commissioners!

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court severely reprimanded the municipal corporation for neglecting court orders to control air pollution in Mumbai. The court issued a stern warning, stating that if the court's directives are not strictly followed, the salaries of the Mumbai and Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioners will be stopped. The court remarked that the officers are also breathing the same polluted air as the Mumbaikars; they are not living on any other planet.
A division bench of Chief Justice Shri Chandrashekhar and Justice Suman Shyam observed that the orders given for controlling air pollution were deliberately ignored. The court expressed strong displeasure and reprimanded the municipal corporation for not taking measures regarding the air quality index.
Instructions to submit data
The court ordered the Mumbai Municipal Corporation to submit details of the daily sensor data for the three months preceding November 2025. "We want the real data, which will reveal the actual situation," the court clarified.
Running the municipal corporation is not the court's job
The municipal corporation's lawyer, S. U. Kamdar, stated that 600 construction sites were required to install air quality monitors, and approximately 400 devices have been installed. To this, the court retorted, "What were you doing all these years? It is not the court's job to review the situation every time and run the municipal corporation."
In this case, the court has emphasized the need to seriously address the issue of air pollution and prioritize the health of Mumbaikars.
