Major action in the ?25 crore crop damage compensation scam; four revenue officers arrested, raids underway on absconding accused
A case of a massive scam worth ?25 crore has come to light in Ambad and Ghansawangi talukas of Jalna district, involving government-approved compensation for crop damage suffered by farmers due to natural calamities. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has arrested four more revenue officers (Talathis) in this mega-scam. This brings the total number of arrested accused to 24.
In this case, some officers and employees of the revenue department had colluded to include the names of bogus beneficiaries in the list. The compensation amount was being deposited into the accounts of individuals who did not even own land, and then withdrawn fraudulently. According to the inquiry committee's report, an embezzlement of ?24,90,77,811 has occurred across 240 villages. There are a total of 29 accused in this scam, of which 22 are revenue officers (Talathis) and 7 are other revenue department employees.
The recently arrested revenue officers include Vinod Jayjayram Thackeray (43, Jalna), Krishna Datta Mujgule (35, Dhalsakheda), Ganesh Rishinder Misal (34, Dudhnakalegaon), and Digambar Gangaram Kurewad (55, Jalna). The Ambad court has remanded all four to 5 days of police custody.
To avoid arrest, the accused were staying away from mobile phones and social media. They even approached the High Court for anticipatory bail, but all bail applications were rejected due to the strong evidence presented by the investigating officers. Some employees, middlemen, and agents are still absconding, and raids are underway to apprehend them. More arrests are expected soon.
