Political Uproar Over KEM Hospital's Name; Amol Kolhe Gives a Strong Reply to Lodha
Mumbai: A new political controversy has erupted over the name of the famous KEM Hospital in Mumbai. Mangal Prabhat Lodha, the co-guardian minister of Mumbai Suburban District, suggested changing the name 'King Edward' of the hospital, stating that it is a symbol of slavery. Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar group) MP Dr. Amol Kolhe has strongly retaliated, directly questioning Lodha by referencing the names of his construction projects.
Speaking at the 100th-anniversary celebration of KEM Hospital, Lodha said, "The name King Edward is a symbol of slavery. Even after 75 years of independence, there is no need to retain such names. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation will take an appropriate decision regarding this." He demanded a change in the name, citing the efforts to change symbols of slavery in the country.
Amol Kolhe responded on social media, stating that Lodha might not be aware of the hospital's history. "This is a hospital that implemented a rule during the period of subjugation that only Indian doctors should be employed. In 75 years after independence, only one new medical college has been established in Mumbai. While Mumbai's population is 2 crore, there are only 50,000 available beds, of which 15,000 are in municipal hospitals."
Kolhe criticized Lodha's construction business, saying, "The names of your projects are Lodha Bellamondo, Bellagio, Altamount, Casa Bella, Trump Tower. Where do these names come from? Why didn't you name them Ram Kutir, Sita Sadan instead? Instead of changing the name, build new hospitals and give them whatever names you want."
KEM Hospital was established in 1926 and is one of the leading public hospitals in Asia. This controversy has also sparked a discussion on Mumbai's healthcare system.
