Violation of Fire Safety Norms: Pune Municipal Corporation Seals 13 PGs and 7 Scrap Warehouses
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated major action against Paying Guest (PG) accommodations, hostels, and scrap warehouses that are violating fire safety regulations. Orders have been issued to shut down 13 PG facilities and seven scrap shops/warehouses in the Vadgaon Budruk, Narhe, and Dhayari areas.
Acting on the orders of Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, a team comprising Chief Fire Officer Ganesh Sonawane, Fire Officer Prabhakar Umratkar, and Construction Department Engineer Vishwajeet Waghmare conducted inspections for the third consecutive day. During these inspections, the fire safety arrangements at the PGs, hostels, and scrap warehouses were examined.
The inspections revealed a lack of fire safety equipment, firefighting systems, valid construction permits, and proper electrical wiring arrangements at several locations. It was also observed that scrap warehouses were operating within residential areas using tin sheds. Furthermore, the presence of shops and warehouses collecting and processing large quantities of scrap within the city came to light.
The PMC has clarified that, moving forward, schools, colleges, PGs, hostels, and hospitals across the city will be inspected for fire safety compliance. Strict action will be taken against establishments that fail to adhere to the regulations. Instructions have also been issued to ensure that firefighting systems are kept functional and in good working condition.
