Karad Bus Accident: Nashik student bus crashes into 20-foot deep pit, 45 seriously injured

Karad, December 2, 2025 (Special Correspondent): A horrific bus accident occurred on the Pune-Bengaluru highway in the limits of Wathar village in Karad taluka at around 5.30 am on Tuesday. The tourist bus carrying 50 students, six teachers and assistants from P. B. Patil College in Nashik suddenly lost control and crashed into a 20-foot deep pit. 45 people were injured in the accident, of which one student is in critical condition. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported. The injured were rescued immediately due to the promptness of the local villagers.
The accident was very serious. The bus (registration number: MH 04 JP 0920), which was returning from a trip to Malvan from Nashik, had reached the flyover construction site on the highway. Due to road widening work, potholes were dug on the side of the road. However, due to inadequate safety arrangements, the driver lost control and the bus fell into the pothole. The front part of the bus was completely crushed, while the passengers had to be rescued by breaking the windows of the bus. There were a total of 57 passengers in the bus, including 50 students, 2 teachers, 4 assistants and the driver.
After the accident, the villagers of Wathar village immediately rushed to the spot and pulled the injured out of the bus. Police under the leadership of Police Inspectors Mahendra Jagtap and Prashant Jadhav of Karad Taluka Police reached the spot. The Highway Police and Road Maintenance Department were informed. Around 40 injured were admitted to Krishna Hospital in Karad, while others were given first aid on the spot. The injuries include head trauma, broken bones and other serious injuries.
Taking cognizance of the incident, MLA Dr. Atul Bhosale reached Krishna Hospital. He visited the injured and inquired about their condition and directed the doctors to provide all necessary facilities immediately. The police are registering the accident and are investigating the driver's statement. Locals have alleged that accidents are happening frequently due to this construction on the highway and have demanded that the security system be strengthened.
The accident has spread fear among the passengers on the Pune-Bengaluru highway. The police have taken temporary measures to keep the traffic flowing smoothly. The families of the injured will be sent from Nashik, and the college administration has assured to take special care for the safety of the students. This incident has once again started discussions on the issue of road safety, and the concerned department is expected to take immediate action.
