Terrible! Chennai Blue Line Metro stuck in tunnel; Passengers had to walk through the darkness

Chennai, December 2: There was a big commotion on the Blue Line of Chennai Metro on Tuesday morning. The metro train heading towards Vinco Nagar depot suddenly stopped in the tunnel between Central Metro and High Court station. The incident, which took place during the morning rush hour, left around 150 to 200 passengers in the train stranded in complete darkness.
Due to a technical glitch, the lights and fans in the coaches also went off as soon as the train stopped. The complete power supply in the tunnel was cut off, causing panic among the passengers. Some passengers were trying to reassure each other by shining their mobile flashlights.
After being stuck for about 10 minutes, the metro staff announced from the train, “Please remain calm. Get out of the train and walk along the tracks to reach High Court station.” Accordingly, all the passengers had to move forward through the darkness on the narrow footpaths along the tracks. Some women and senior citizens were helped by other passengers.
After reaching the High Court station, the passengers were sent on another metro. The Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRL) said it has launched an investigation into the incident and has apologised for the inconvenience caused to the passengers. The incident disrupted services on the Blue Line for some time in the morning.
