Nationwide Outcry Against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar; Opposition Takes to the Streets from Punjab to Bihar
New Delhi – Opposition parties have launched nationwide protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Election Commission's 'SIR' process. Opposition members have taken to the streets from Punjab to Patna, staging protests outside Election Commission offices.
Both Election Commissioners had reportedly raised objections to the Commission's decisions on 14 occasions over the past 10 months. Following these revelations, the Congress party called for nationwide protests. Security has been stepped up outside the Election Commission office in New Delhi. The Youth Congress organized a march from Raisina Road to Jantar Mantar.
In Bihar, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has also adopted an aggressive stance, calling for protests against Gyanesh Kumar outside all district headquarters on September 25. Police used water cannons on Congress workers protesting in Patna. Congress activists also took to the streets to protest against the Election Commission in Chandigarh, Dehradun, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Delhi.
CJP founder Abhijit Deepke has issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding Gyanesh Kumar's resignation. He questioned, "If the elections are not going to be fair, why do opposition parties contest them?" Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi was detained during the protests. RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha stated that the issue is no longer confined to political parties and Parliament but has now reached the streets.
The opposition has united against Gyanesh Kumar. The Congress is preparing to move a new resolution in both Houses of Parliament. The procedure for removing the Chief Election Commissioner from office is prescribed under Article 324(5) of the Constitution.
