Kokate, convicted in the apartment scam, avoids arrest, but the threat to his MLA position remains.
Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) leader, former minister, and MLA Manikrao Kokate, who was sentenced to two years of imprisonment in the 1995 apartment allocation scam case in Nashik, received partial relief from the Mumbai High Court today.
The High Court stayed the execution of Kokate's sentence and granted him bail on a personal bond of ?1 lakh. This has averted his immediate arrest.
However, the court refused to stay the conviction. As a result, the threat to Manikrao Kokate's MLA position remains.
This case dates back to 1995, and the Kokate brothers are accused of misappropriating apartments reserved for economically weaker sections by submitting forged documents. The Nashik Sessions Court had recently upheld the lower court's sentence, after which Kokate filed an appeal in the High Court.
Following this verdict, Kokate had resigned from his ministerial post, and his portfolio was transferred to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
